With 1 goal and 1 assist in 2 games, the Winterhawks Player of the Week for October 126 through November 1 is Stevie Grumley.

It was more about creating chances than his actual numbers, or at least a combination. He was also pretty strong defensively in the Winterhawks’ win.

He has 7 points in 13 games so far, tied for tops among Winterhawks defensemen (ahead of 3rd by a lot). With Max Pšenička out, they’ve had to rely on him more as an all around player than they were expecting to have to.

Assists on his goal: Jordan Duguay 1.

Goal he assisted on: Jordin St. Louis 1.

The week in review

A reversal, as the Winterhawks won the game they were underdogs in and lost the game they were favorites in.

The Vancouver win stamped them as a team with a solid defensive identity, which is such a change that I don’t think most of us are ready to buy it as a norm. The win looked really good on Friday with the Giants blowing out 2nd-place Victoria. It didn’t look quite as good Sunday when they lost to last-place Prince George. The Giants are an up-and-down team, and Portland might have been fortunate to catch them on the down.

The Kelowna loss didn’t hurt their defensive reputation too much. But it did highlight their struggles on offense, both at even strength and on the power play. The biggest issue is them converting chances, with a 3rd-worst shooting percentage.

They’re hanging in there. And this week will be their biggest test so far.
