Talking points
Was this the Winterhawks’ best win of the season? It probably was. The Giants came in leading the division and were in the top 10 in the CHL. And Portland, while not as dominant as the shot totals would indicate, did outshoot them 41-23 and were clearly the better team. Including 17-7 in the 3rd period.
Giants goalie Burke Hood, who came into the game with a .940 save percentage, gave up two early howlers that put the Giants in a hole: a tip on the rush by Jordin St. Louis that he never moved on, and a shot from the goal line by Jordan Duguay that banked in off him. He also played a puck that might have been icing in the 3rd period, leading to a turnover resulting in Portland’s third goal. He ended up stopping 38 of 41, but those goals really hurt the Giants.
Portland’s defense put together another strong performance, incredibly again without Max Pšenička. Vancouver came in with a number of hot players, including Mathis Preston, Cam Parr, and Blake Chorney, and Portland held them all scoreless. It was actually Parr’s first scoreless game since he joined the Giants. It’s probably sacrificing some offense, but the Winterhawks are now 3rd-best in goals allowed per game, impressive given their experience. Will McLaughlin isn’t scoring a ton, but he’s doing a lot of good work moving the puck up ice. Stevie Grumley and Avery Laliberte, lacking WHL but not junior experience, were solid, and Grumley had 2 points.
On the Giants’ postgame show, both announcers and coaches singled out the Winterhawks forecheck as a big part of Portland’s win, especially in the 2nd period. Nathan Brown, Jake Gustafson, and Luke Wilfley get kudos even thought they went scoreless.
When not playing Spokane, the Winterhawks are now 6-0-1-1.
